There are few relationships more mutually satisfying than those between writers and their feline companions, for on the surface only limited demands are made on either side. As British writers Aldous Huxley and Muriel Spark both observed, a cat is perhaps ideally suited to a writer's solitary existence and, in turn, an author absorbed in his or her work makes a suitably self-contained companion for a cat. It is often felt that the presence of a cat on the desk or on the lap can help to influence a kind of meditative concentration that stimulates the powers of the imagination, creating a close bond and understanding of each other's needs between writer and pet through the long hours spent together.
